Horseback Riding Chile:
Private Estancia Riding Week

The Estancia is located in the Futaleufu's Valle de los Reyes, or Valley of the Kings, at the confluence of the Rio Espolon and the Rio Futaleufu. This 300 acre farm is a series of terraced pastures and groves of native coihue and cypress trees ringed by snowcapped mountains. This Private Estancia Lodge is the most refined option Expediciones Chile offers and it is the only exclusive lodge of it's kind on the Futaleufu River. It has three bedrooms and sleeps six. After horseback riding you can return to your accommodations each afternoon. The house is a model of green living, with solar taking care of most energy needs. There are horseback trails right outside your front door, and the top fly fishing lagoon is a short walk from the house and on the estancia property. Horses are on site and a guide will be available for saddling up and riding at your disposal. This is an ideal arrangement for a family, two to three couples, business associates, the politico or celebrity looking for guaranteed privacy. It is like having your own private lodge. Charter flights or helicopter arrival and departures can be arranged from Puerto Montt Chile into the Futaleufu village air strip.

Slide Show, Interactive Map, Video, 3-D Trip Tour

More than an equestrian vacation, horseback riding from the Estancia Ranch is a way of life. Imagine walking on the front door to waiting horses. While riding you are immersed in the equestrian culture and beauty of Patagonia Chile. There is plenty of riding to be done on the ranch itself. There are also horseback rides that follow the 'huaso senderos' – the cowboy trails. This is an extensive network of trails, dirt roads, and swinging bridges used by locals on horseback, oxcart and by foot. These trails move through the spectacular isolated river valley of the Futaleufu and its tributaries. These trails lead us back in time, to a simpler way of life, through nearby settlements and quaint rural homes. But each day you return to the comfort of the Estancia. Custom Multi sport activities can be arranged to your desire.

Other activities that can be arranged: Whitewater rafting, Mountain biking, Sea kayaking, Whitewater Kayak lessons, Fly Fishing from a raft.

Day by Day:

Day 1 Friday: Depart your home town
Fly on an over night flight to Buenos Aires Argentina. Welcome to the warmth of the Southern Hemisphere in summer.

Day 2 Saturday: Travel to Trevelin, Patagonia Argentina
Early morning arrival in Buenos Aires, change airports and connect with a flight to Esquel, Argentina. Get ready to unwind, relax as an Expediciones Chile vehicle and staff will be waiting to take you to the border and on to the Private Estancia Ranch at the confluence of the Rio Espolon and Rio Futaleufu.

Day 3 Sunday: Horse back ride on property
to the Futaleufu Lagoon "Poson de Reyes"and around the Estancia. Lunch at the Lagoon. Return to the Private Estancia Ranch. Awake this morning and enjoy a hearty breakfast at the Estancia. Today we horseback ride toward the secret Futaleufu Lagoon through the spectacular glacier ringed Valley, arguably the climax of beauty in the valley. Here we will ride across wide open pastures and along the Rio Futaleufu towards the hidden secret: Poson de Reyes. This ride is spectacular; beautiful vistas and no inhabitants...everything you imagine when picturing Patagonia!

Day 4: Monday:
All day Ride up the Futaleufu river and into the remote primitive Rio Chico valley. Return to the Private Estancia Ranch..

Day 5: Tuesday:
Ride to the remote Benidicto Ranch We begin today's ride by heading downstream along the Futaleufu river. We start through green rolling hills and ranch land. The gravel road continues for several miles before we enter a deep black rock gorge. Our trail is cut into the side of the canyon, giving a bird's eye view of the restless, radiant turquoise Futaleufu River below. Several miles later the gorge opens into the remote Las Escalas Valley. We will ride across this enchanting valley and enter an old growth, temperate forest of Coigue trees. Coming out of the forest, The ride leads us to a 136-acre working ranch set deep in the forest, overlooking the river valley below. Apart from the spectacular views, this self sustainable ranch, without road access or electricity is a marvel in its own right. There, you will be greeted by our host at a rustic wood crafted ranch that functions completely off the grid. You will get the full tour around the ranch before heading back to the Estancia for a feast of traditional Chilean cuisine..

Day 6 Wednesday:
All day Circuit Ride along side the impressive Inferno gorge to Las Escalas valley. You will cross the river on the swinging bridge. You will ride up out of the Futaleufu river valley through a Coyhue forest where at the top of the canyon you overlook the Espolon river valley and your ride down on the country lanes of rural ranch land that lead into the village of Futaleufu. After a little shopping in the village an additional hour on your horse takes you back to the Estancia.

Day 7 Thurday: Choice of any Multisport activity or horse back riding
Depending on your connections you are now are in Argentina ready for an early departure in a cab from you hotel to the bus station in Esquel for the trip to Bariloche and your flight back to Beunos Aires.  A private transfer can be arranged direct from your hotel to the airport in Bariloche.  If you have a flight from Esquel you have the morning to enjoy and buy gifts in Trevelin before your 2 pm flight to Buenos Aires and the connection back to your home country.

Day 8 Friday:
Ride to the trail head of the National Huemul reserve for a vigorous hike uphiill alongside a waterfall to the top of the ridge. This Patagonia riding day takes us upstream to a charming valley that contains the endangered Huemul; a small deer like animal that resembles the fabled jackelope of the American intermountain west. This animal is rarer that any species will encounter while trekking in Torres del Paine. In order to protect its dwindling numbers, the Republic of Chile has created a National Reserve in this spectacular valley. The Futaleufu National Reserve, managed by CONAF, boasts a surface area of 12,065 hectares (28,956 acres). It was created to protect the Chilean cedar tree species (Austrocedrus chilensis) and the Huemul (Hipocalemus bisulcus). The reserve is completely undeveloped except for the signs announcing your entry into the protected area. It is a rare treat to spot one of these endangered animals.

Day 9 Saturday: Early morning departure to Esquel and Return to Capital City
Our vehicles will be waiting in the morning to take you to the border. Here taxis or van will be waiting to take you back to Esquel and your flight back to Beunos Aires and connect on to an international flight to your home country.
