Whitewater Kayak Chile:
Kayak Futaleufu Week - Class IV/V

“The Greatest Whitewater on Earth” This is an exhilarating week for advanced Class IV-V paddlers. Our aim is to prepare and support you to paddle as many of the sections and rapids that you desire. You can have a fun week without paddling any of the Class V, as the Futaleufu has explosive fun waves and surf spots that will challenge you for the entire week. However, if you do have ambitions to paddle the Class V, itt is nice to have support and guidance, especially your first time through Casa de Piedra, Terminator, Inferno Canyon, and Throne Room. We usually walk the Zeta. As a class IV-V paddler we realize that often one is not used to being guided, we are here to make this easy and fun for you. No worrying about shuttles, preparing meals or finding the takeouts. That is our job. Even the Apres Kayak life at Campo Tres Monjas is enjoyable at the exotic riverside camp. We know we are at the end of the earth in Patagonia but once you get here the paddling shuttle ration is the best. There is no better place to paddle anywhere in the world and you will understand why it is called “The Greatest Whitewater on Earth”.

The Eco Campo Tres Monjas is located on a white sand beach at the confluence of the Futaleufu river and the Rio Azul. The RiverNest Cabins are hidden between the river bank and the riparian forest, and each cabin is accessed by a private sand trail and surrounded by exotic Patagonian trees. After dinner, you can enjoy a campfire on the beach as you watch the moon rise between the impressive spires of Tres Monjas peak. At camp we have a sauna, flush toilets, a drying room for your river clothes, a dining lodge, and a selection of hot showers, which includes an exotic outdoor shower masterfully hidden between natural boulders. In this environment, you will have the opportunity to harmonize with nature. On this week-long trip, you will be able to play hard during the day in the Patagonian wild and return to the comforts of sit-down dining, a cozy stove, a sauna, and a warm bed. Kayaking in Chile does not get any more exciting, wild, and comfortable than this.

Day by Day:

Day 1 Friday: Depart your hometown
Overnight flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Day 2 Saturday: Travel to Trevelin, Argentina in Patagonia
Welcome to the warmth of summer in the Southern Hemisphere with an early arrival in Buenos Aires. Change airports with a taxi or shuttle bus and catch another flight to Esquel, Argentina. Taxi 45 minutes to Trevelin, Argentina, a charming mountain village just 45 minutes from the border and from the Futaleufu River in Chile. If you prepay, ExChile can meet all of your transportation needs until we pick you up at the Argentine-Chilean border the following day. Check into the Casa de Piedra hotel and walk to one of several Argentine restaurants with the Chilean Andes in view. Unwind, relax, and get a good night’s sleep before the start of your trip the next morning.

Day 3 Sunday: Kayak from the near the Border to Campo Tres Monjas Class III-IV
After a relaxing night's sleep at a hotel in the quaint Welsh town of Trevelin, deep in Argentinian Patagonia, we begin this exciting trip with a taxi to the Chilean-Argentine border, where an ExChile representative meets you. We are now in the Futaleufu Valley. After you clear customs, your ExChile trip officially starts. After meeting your guide and outfitting you with your kayak, we go direct to the Futaleufu put-in. After changing into our river gear, your luggage will be whisked away and magically show up at your cabin at our river eco-camp before you arrive. After the introduction of whitewater and paddling skills we encounter a section of mild class II water flowing through the Las Escalas valley. Plenty of time to warm up. A couple of hours later the river shows its wild side and we encounter "Zeta" and "Throne Room", two of the most challenging (Class V+) rapids on the Futaleufu. We will portage both. After the portages, we get into our first action packed section called "The Wild Mile" which contains Tres Islas (IV), Roller Coaster (III), Honorable Mention (IV), Wild Mile (IV minus) and the climatic Thing. The excitement doesn't stop until we get to the confluence of the Futaleufu and Azul rivers as we take out on the unspoiled beach at our Camp Tres Monjas with the stunning peak of the same name standing guard. Our secluded camp, complete with sauna, showers and dining hall, will serve as the base for the rest of the week's adventures. This setting is arguably one of the most stunning on the river. Relax in the sauna and ready yourself for an elegant meal on the beach.

Day 4 Monday: Terminator Section minus Terminator
You wake to the brilliance of life along the shores of the Futaleufu, with the jagged Tres Monjas peaks standing sentinel over the river and camp. After a  breakfast, there will be a little time to relax and stretch. Our put in is here. The “Terminator” section. You will have the opportunity to warm up on numerous Class III rapids, and then have the option of walking, sneaking (IV+), or running the huge and impressive Class V “Terminator” rapid. From the "Terminator", we will kayak downstream on the Futaleufu to the Class IV “Khyber Pass”, and onto some giant wave action in the Class IV “Himalayas”. Here you will surf some of the biggest standing waves in the hemisphere! We will return to our Futaleufu kayak camp to relax in the hot sauna or on the naturally formed white sand beach.

Day 5 Tuesday: El Corazón - Heart of the Futaleufu and Más o Menos & Casa de Piedra
The kayaking this day is filled with the big exploding waves for which the Futaleufu is world famous. We put-in at the Swinging Bridge and run the the Heart of the Futaleufu - also known as  "The Bridge-to-Bridge Section". Here you will kayak Futaleufu whitewater continuously through Class IV big water action, including “Entrada”, “Pillow”, and “Mundaca”, one of the largest breaking wave-holes on the Futaleufu. You can go left or right. We will pass the Futaleufu Bridge take out and continue on to the Class IV+ “Más o Menos”, and the technical Class V “Casa de Piedra”. Finally the river eases off for the beautiful and playful Class III “El Macal” section. After a big day of Futaleufu kayaking you will be ready to slip into the wood-heated sauna and ease your tired muscles.

Day 6 Wednesday: Rio Azul to Terminator
Today, if water levels permit we will drive to the footbridge put-in on the Class III-IV Río Azul, a tight, glacial-fed small river that runs through a lush fern lined granite micro canyon. Here you get a chance to relax and paddle the technical drops, surf on some waves, and enjoy the staggering scenery. We arrive at our camp where the Río Azul meets the Río Futaleufú. We know get your another chance at the running the Terminator section.

Day 7 Thursday: Terminator and Bridge to Bridge sections
You wake to the brilliance of life along the shores of the Futaleufu, with the jagged Tres Monjas peaks standing sentinel over the river and camp. After a delicious breakfast, you outfit your kayak and put-in at our beach for your first taste of the big water of the Futaleufu, the “Terminator” section.

Day 8 Wednesday: ”Graduation”, Upper Futaleufu & Infierno Canyon
For an exciting finale, we head to the remote and spectacular upper section of the Futaleufu River. Those paddlers who are ready for the committing Class V Infierno Gorge will put-in above the mini-gorge just outside of the town of Futaleufu, or on the Río Espolón. “Gates of the Inferno”, “Wall Shot”, “Dynamite”, and the “Perfect Storm”. At the takeout you will be met with your luggage. You will have time to change your clothes and make our way toward the border where your trip officially ends. Here a taxi (You can prepay it) awaits to take you to your hotel in Trevelin where you can take a shower, and change clothes before enjoying your last night in Patagonia. There are a handful of outstanding and reasonably priced restaurants in Trevelin that we can recommend. Relax, recover, and look back on the exciting week of kayaking before heading home the following morning.

Day 9 Saturday: Return to Capital City
You wake up in Argentina, where you can eat breakfast and relax before you take a taxi from your hotel to the airport in Esquel. Return to Buenos Aires, change airports, and board your international flight home.

Day 10 Sunday: Return home
