Whitewater Kayak Chile:
Kayak Futaleufu Whitewater Week - Class IV/V

This is the ultimate week for advanced Class IV-V paddlers. Our aim will be to hit all of the major class V rapids on the Futaleufu, some more than once. On this trip you will have the opportunity to paddle the hardest lines on, Casa de Piedra, Terminator, Inferno Canyon, Zeta, and Throne Room.

Our whitewater kayaking season begins in October in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina - sometimes referred to as the "Switzerland of South America" for its spectacular skiing, scenery and vibrant night life. In December we start our Futaleufu kayaking season on one of the greatest "big water" rivers in the world from our private Tres Monjas Eco-Camp at the Rio Azul and Futaleufu confluence. There you will find the latest play and river running boats, sit-down gourmet dining, native wood sauna, on-staff masseuse, white sand beaches and deluxe platform tent camping. Our season continues on the Futaleufu River through the month of April.

Day by Day:

Day 1 Friday: Depart your home town
Fly to Miami and connect on an over night flight to Buenos Aires Argentina. Welcome to the warmth of the southern Hemisphere in summer.

Day 2 Saturday: Travel to Trevelin, Patagonia Argentina
Early morning arrival in Buenos Aires. Change airports and catch another flight to Bariloche, or Esquel Argentina. From Bariloche, a luxury bus will take you on a beautiful drive along the Patagonian lakes and mountains to Esquel. IF you fly direct to Esquel you can arrive in Trevelin with some time to enjoy the area. Trevelin, Argentina is a charming mountain village gateway just 45 minutes from Futaleufu River in Chile. Trevelin is serviced by ground transport (Bus or private taxi) from the Jet ports in Bariloche (4 hrs) or Esquel (40 min). Check into a hotel in this charming village and walk to one of several superb restaurants. Unwind, relax, and get a good nights sleep before the start of you trip 9:00 am the next morning.

Day 3 Sunday: Your trip starts. Kayak from the near the Border to Campo Tres Monjas
After a relaxing night's sleep at a hotel in the quaint Welch town of Trevelin deep in Patagnia Argentina, we begin this exciting trip with a quick shuttle across the Chilean/Argentinean border and into the Futaleufu Valley. We go direct to the Futaleufu put in where we will meet your guides and select your kayak. After changing into our river gear, your luggage will be whisked away and magically show up at your tent or cabin at our river eco-camp before you arrive. After the introduction of whitewater and paddling skills we encounter a section of mild class II water flowing through the Las Escalas valley. A couple of hours later the river shows its wild side and we encounter "Zeta" and "Throne Room", two of the most challenging (Class V+) rapids on the Futaleufu. We will portage both. After the portages, we get into our first action packed section called "The Wild Mile" which contains Tres Islas (IV), Roller Coaster (III), Honorable Mention (IV), Wild Mile (IV minus) and the climatic Thing. The excitement doesn't stop until we get to the confluence of the Futaleufu and Azul rivers as we take out on the unspoiled beach at our Camp Tres Monjas with the stunning peak of the same name standing guard. Our secluded camp, complete with sauna, showers and dining hall, will serve as the base for the rest of the week's adventures. This setting is arguably one of the most stunning on the river. Relax in the sauna and ready yourself for an elegant meal on the beach.

Day 4 Monday: Terminator Section
You wake to the brilliance of life along the shores of the Futaleufu, with the jagged Tres Monjas peaks standing sentinel over the river and camp. After a delicious breakfast, you outfit your kayak and put-in at our beach for your first taste of the big water of the Futaleufu, the "Terminator" section. You will have the opportunity to warm up on numerous Class III rapids, and then have the option of walking, sneaking (IV+), or running the huge and impressive Class V "Terminator" rapid. From the "Terminator", we will kayak downstream on the Futaleufu to the Class IV "Khyber Pass", and on to some giant wave action in the Class IV "Himalayas". Here you will surf some of the biggest standing waves in the hemisphere! We will return to our Futaleufu kayak camp to relax in the hot sauna or on the naturally formed white sand beach.

Day 5 Tuesday: El Corazón - Heart of the Futaleufu and Más o Menos & Casa de Piedra
The kayaking this day is filled with the big exploding waves for which the Futaleufu is world famous. We put-in at the "Zapata's" Swinging Bridge and run the "Corazón" – the Heart of the Futaleufu - previously named "The Bridge-to-Bridge Section". Here you will kayak Futaleufu whitewater continuously through Class IV big water action, including "Entrada", "Pillow", and "Mundaca", one of the largest breaking wave-holes in the world. Unliike the previous day, we will pass the Futaleufu Bridge take out and continue on to the Class IV+ "Más o Menos", and the technical Class V "Casa de Piedra". Finally the river eases off for the beautiful and playful Class III "El Macal" section. After a big day of Futaleufu kayaking you will be ready to slip into the wood-heated sauna and ease your tired muscles. Kayak Chile's camp masseuse will be available for any of your sore muscles and joints

Day 6 Wednesday: Upper Futaleufu & Infierno Canyon
For an exciting finale, we head to the remote and spectacular upper section of the Futaleufu River. Those paddlers who are ready for the committing Class V Infierno Gorge will put-in above the mini-gorge just outside of the town of Futaleufu, or on the Río Espolón. Others will take a spectacular shuttle drive and enter the river below the Gorge. This visually spectacular section of river includes the Class V rapids "Zeta" and "Throne Room", which will test even the strongest of kayakers (See "The Extremists" video clip below.) Or, take the well-worn footpaths around the two rapids, and head into the "Wild Mile Section": four miles of continuous kayak Futaleufu whitewater action, which takes us right back to our tents and dry clothes at camp.

Day 7 Thursday: Terminator Section
