Skiing Patagonia Backcountry Safari

Argentina Skiing, Ski Argentina

Cerro Bayo, Alta Patagonia – Catedral, La Hoya

On our eleven day Skiing Patagonia Powder Safari we travel deep into the Heart of the Andes Mountains and explore the mythical ski resorts of Alta Patagonia – Catedral , Cerro Bayo and La Hoya. We will visit the Patagonia ski towns of San Carlos de Bariloche, Villa La Angostura, and Esquel. This advanced to expert level Argentina Ski Safari combines all the best of Argentina skiing resorts offering a terrific back country options when snow conditions permit. In addition to skiing in Patagonia with its awesome powder our guests will get a firsthand exposure to the culture of Patagonia, Argentina and its famous nightlife as well. Ski Argentina!

Day 1-3: Skiing Patagonia’s Cerro Alta Patagonia - Catedral

You will be met by one of skiing representatives at the International Airport of San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina. After or Patagonia Ski group is assembled we will head to city of San Carlos de Bariloche, a fabled “Swiss-styled” ski city that is home to the world famous Patagonia ski resort, Alta Patagonia – Catedral. Alta Patagonia rivals skiing Chile’s Valle Nevado in size. Here we will spend the next three nights, in a comfortable hosteria, fifteen minutes from Alta Patagonia and epic back country skiing terrain.
The late afternoon will be spent in the small village at the base with free time to grab a drink, send e-mails, or check out the local scene.
After dinner, there will be free time to explore the downtown area of Bariloche, which offers live music, discos, cinemas, and chocolate factories. All breakfasts and dinners are included with your trip!

The Alta Patagonia Ski Resort:

Cerro Cathedral is the main skiing peak of San Carlos de Bariloche. Prior to 1998, Catedral had a number of competing ski lift operators that merged to form the resort of Alta Patagonia and uniting the entire lift system under one All Mountain Pass (lift ticket). The mountain itself is owned by the Argentinean government and like its namesake, Alta / Snowbird, in the Utah, it is blessed with spectacular powder. Over half the trails on Cathedral are rated intermediate or higher making this one of South America’s greatest snow skiing destinations in the same league as ski in Chile’s Portillo and Termas de Chillan. Alta Patagonia is a European Style skiing resort with one of South America’s only tramways.

The Skiing at Catedral:

We will spend two full days here exploring the advanced and expert Argentina ski trails of Alta Patagonia – Catedral with panoramic views of Volcan Tronodor (3554 meters, 11,660 ft) and Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi. The south side of the mountain is highly praised by local powder hounds as “the place ski in Argentina”. Alta Patagonia offers excellent hikes to the steep chutes, bowls and cliff bands of “Punta Nevada” and “La Laguna” on the backside. Heli-skiing is an option as well! There is no finer skiing in Chile or Argentina than Cerro Cathedral!

Apres Ski Activities:

No Argentina or Chile ski trip is complete without great après ski activities. After the lifts close we will be spend some time in the small ski village at the base of the mountain. Here we will be able to relax, order a drink and snacks, check our e-mail, do some shopping and experience the Argentina skiing scene firsthand. l or explore the streets of San Martin de Los Andes, one of our favorite Patagonia ski towns!

Night Life - San Carlos de Bariloche:

If you are going to ski in Patagonia, San Carlos de Bariloche is the town to do it from. Your evenings in San Carlos de Bariloche are free to sample Argentina’s fine dinnertime cuisine, live music, discothèques, try your luck at the local casino, go shopping, or just relax.

Day 4-7: Skiing Patagonia – La Hoya

Today we drive south, heading deeper into Argentine Patagonia, following the trail of the outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid. The rugged, serrated snow painted landscape will indeed make you feel like you have traveled back to another era. We will stop midday to eat in one of Patagonia’s best Micro Breweries before arriving at our hotel in Esquel, our home for this portion of our Skiing Argentina Powder Safari.

The La Hoya Ski Resort:

La Hoya is located about 8 miles (13 kilometers) away from the city of Esquel, Argentina. The mountain is so positioned so that it accumulates great quantities of snow even in the late season. High Patagonia winds load this horseshoe-shaped ski resort with deep dry Patagonian Powder! The resort is ringed by the Esquel Mountain range and Mount Nahuel Pan. La Hoya boasts designated areas for randoneé skiing, and spectacular off-piste areas with deep snow. The resort is government owned and operated and is known for the coldest and driest powder in Argentina. Powder Skiing in Argentina does not get better than this! Ski Patagonia!

The Skiing at La Hoya:

We will spend three full days (4 nights) here exploring the advanced and expert Argentina ski terrain of La Hoya. Easy hiking gives us accesses to awesome southern facing steep bowls and chutes that remind us of a mini Las Lenas, as some chutes reach 50 degrees! There is plenty of excellent advanced to expert terrain to keep us entertained throughout our stay here. The mountain itself has nine ski lifts that can accommodate 4400 skiers per hour with 150 hectares of ski-able terrain. The mountain peak is 2,150 meters (7050 feet) high and 1350 meters (4429 feet) at the base. The vertical drop from the top of the lifts is, 750 meters (2,460 feet) with the longest run being 4.5 kilometers.

Apres Ski / Nightlife Activities:

Esquel and La Hoya lie way off the usual gringo tourist and Argentina-Chile skiing routes. The town itself is a fusion between the old mining industry and the burgeoning tourist industry. Surprisingly, the nightlife and restaurants are excellent.

Day 8-10: Skiing Patagonia – Cerro Bayo

Depending on the snow conditions in the region, we will either ski the morning in La Hoya or head back North on our very scenic drive along Lake Nahuel Huapi to the beautiful Argentina ski town of Villa La Angostura, our home for the next 3 nights. Here on the Northwest tip of Lake Nahuel Huapi, tucked away in the Andes, is the ski center of Cerro Bayo. With no crowds, fun locals, a unique history, and plenty of good ski touring to steep powder runs.

The Cerro Bayo Ski Resort:

Situated on the Northwest tip of Lago Nahuel Huapi, in a remote side canyon, is the Argentina ski center of Cerro Bayo. Cerro Bayo was opened in 1978 and is one of the older resorts in the region. The mountain of Cerro Bayo has a double summit (1,780 meters, 5,850 feet) that offers stunning panoramic views of the Lake Nahuel Huapi. It is located about ten kilometers (6 miles) from the village of Villa La Angostura. This resort is way off the beaten tourist paths and offers, eleven lifts, limited crowds, fun locals, a storied history, and a profusion of good steep powder runs. Cerro Bayo is one of our favorite spots for skiing Patagonia!

The Skiing at Cerro Bayo:

In addition to well maintained and groomed trails, the backcountry hiking here is excellent, accessing steep bowls and some of the best tree runs in South America. We will spend a full two days here exploring this Argentina ski resort and the areas beyond.

Apres Ski Activities:

After spending some time getting to know the locals at the resort’s pub we will head back to the village. Villa de Angostura (Spanish for narrowness) sits astride the Quetrihue Peninsula and is the gateway to Los Arrayanes National Park, virtually an island in Lago Nahuel Huapi, known for its six hundred year old Arrayan Trees (Myrtaceae bushes). The town numbers about 11,000 people and resembles a traditional European ski village constructed of wood. Villa de Angostura offers numerous places for after après Patagonia skiing relaxation.

Night Life - Villa La Angostura:

Relax back at our comfortable hotel, go shopping in the village, and enjoy sumptuous meals as only the Argentines can prepare! Famous Argentine steak and red wine from the Mendoza region are the popular choice, but there are plenty of other options including vegetarian to wild game such as boar, elk, and fresh trout right out of the local rivers. All breakfasts and dinners are included with your trip!

Day 11: Skiing Patagonia – Cerro Bayo & Departure

After breakfast we have the option of another morning of skiing or feel free to go shopping for last minute souveniers in town. Later we will journey back to San Carlos de Bariloche and our waiting flights back home or to Santiago de Chile if you are planning to Ski Chile with us! Adios amigos!
