Employee Transportation to Futaleufu

Expediciones Chile and Futaleufu River Overview:

Expediciones Chile was founded in 1985 by Olympic kayaker Chris Spelius. The company was the first commercial outfitter on the Futaleufu. The Futaleufu is one of the most challenging commercially run rivers in the world. It is located in the remote region of Patagonia, Chile. The Futaleufu season is from November 15th to April 15th. The office and employee housing are located in the rural town of Futaleufu, Chile. The Espolon river is at the edge of the town and flows into the nearby Futaleufu. The Espolon put-in is 4 blocks from our office and the employee house. Our Riverside Campo Tres Monjas and CondorNest ranch are 21 kilometers or 40 minute drive downstream at the confluence of the Rio Azul and Futaleufu.

Expediciones Chile is a conservative merit based, multi-cultural, gender neutral company. It is expected that employees represent Expediciones Chile, the country of Chile, their home country, the river running community, and their family. We respect the culture and laws of Chile. Approximately half of the staff is Chilean, and all prospective employees must be comfortable in a multi language environment. They should be willing to to learn to speak both English and Spanish. Flexibility, teamwork, adaptability and an outstanding work ethic are absolutely essential. Those who elect to submit a job application to us should be sure that they are comfortable with this work environment. Please take time to review the website and view our videos and slideshows. Because of the demanding nature of our positions, Expediciones Chile is extremely selective in making its employment and hiring decisions. Only individuals with all necessary qualifications, substantial experience and outstanding recommendations from current and past employers will be hired.

A high percentage of our employees come through our internship program. The internship allows potential employees to participate in an intensive training process their first season, and be ready to work their second season. You will work hard but after a season with us as an intern you will have Class 5 river skills. Those that come through the internship and are hired the second season may be eligible for a standby air ticket from their home town to Santiago Chile. If they complete the second season successfully and in good standing, they will get the return ticket back to their home country.

Employee Culture:

The tourist season in Futaleufu can be hectic. The staff is very busy assisting, leading and entertaining clients. There are few opportunities to take time off. During lower traffic periods, employees may be asked to perform tasks unrelated to those defined by their positions. The Expediciones Chile clientele arrive to Patagonia from all parts of the world and expect the trip of a lifetime. It is the duty of the staff to make this dream come true. It must be understood that the pressure of the job can get intense. All employees are expected to put the client first and be available to them at all times. Qualified applicants must also be personable individuals who are capable of intelligently conversing with the clients and must be able to give them an unforgettable experience.

All companies tend to reflect the values of the founder. See our River Philosophy. Though the river lifestyle has sometimes been known for its "partying ways", Expediciones Chile guides and staff do not participate in illegal drug use, or drunken blow outs. The staff is picked carefully to avoid that culture. We believe one can have great great times with the challenges of the natural environment, the natural high associated with exercise, the beauty of learning secrets to new skills, and the incredible beauty of Patagonia and its local culture. Our clients are incredibly successful, well educated and from diverse countries from all over the world. The dinner conversations are often profound, and the shared experiences are very bonding. Many of our clients stay in touch with us, and other trip members after their trip. We have families on some of our trips and we think we should make our clients proud to have their kids exposed to the young adults that comprise our staff. At times we have had a wrong guide fit and had to let guides go before the season is over. This is not pleasant for anyone so make sure you are ok with our culture.

On occasions there will be free time after work. Appointed guides will be in charge of multiple day trips and will eat with them at camp and help with serving and clearing the tables. At these times a guide may be served wine with dinner. Other than that the company does not supply alcohol to employees.  Alcohol can be purchased when one is at the camp, but for the safety of the guests it should be limited to a beer after the days activities.

Because of the demanding nature of our positions, Expediciones Chile is extremely selective in making its employment and hiring decisions. Only individuals with all necessary qualifications, substantial experience and outstanding recommendations from current and past employers will be hired.

A high percentage of our employees come through our internship program. The internship allows potential employees to to participate in an intensive training process their first season, and be ready to work their second season.

Employee Transportation to Futaleufu: How do I get to Futaleufu?

Our employees and interns are responsible to get to Futaleufu on their own. It is recommended that employees or interns that are planning paddling outside of work plan to bring their own kayak or purchase one in Chile. At the end of the season one can resell it in Chile or Argentina and recover most of their cost. The value of a used kayak most certainly is worth more in Chile or Argentina than in your home country.

It is required that you bring all your own paddling and rescue gear. See employee packing List.

1. Hometown to Santiago: Purchase a ticket from your home town to Santiago with a thru fare to Puerto Montt. (Latam and American have thru fares to Puerto Montt).  Taking a kayak can be sensitive. However if you cover you kayak with a bag or tape cardboard over to protect it,  many have been successful calling it a surf kayak and flying with it.  It has to be under 43 kilo even if your paying for oversize bags.

2. Santiago to Puerto Montt:

  1. Air: Clear customs then take your baggage to check in upstairs at the counter.  If you have a thru fare Latam airlines will respect the same baggage allowance you flew with internationally. Let them know that it flew in with you internationally and call it a surf yak. This has worked, but officially they do not fly kayaks. If they do not take it ask them to schedule you on a later flight and follow the dirctions below on how to get a kayak to Futaleufu.

  2. Bus: If you are taking a bus to Puerto Montt you want a bus that arrives early around and 6:35 am to with the bus to  Chaiten and Futaleufu. We recommend TurBus they have a bus that leaves Santiago at 5:15 pm arrives at the Puerto Montt terminal at 6:35 am.

3. Puerto Montt to Futaleufu: How do i get to Futaleufu from Puerto Montt.  Take the airport bus to the Puerto Montt bus terminal.

When one travels south of Puerto Montt you are entering the frontier. Passenger transport is subsidized by the government. The bus crosses three different fjords on a ferry where you can walk around and enjoy the incredible spectacular views.  (Each year the the schedules may change slightly. This write up gives an overview.  Be sure to check the links for the latest updates. Our page updated May 20, 2017)

If the two morning buses have departed, purchase a ticket for the following morning from Puerto Montt to Chaiten and spend the night in Puerto Montt. Morning buses depart normally at 7 am. In Chaiten you need to get off the bus and enter the bus office proactively  to purchase the connecting bus ticket to take you the final leg to Futaleufu. You will have to pay an additional small fare but you and the passengers arriving from Puerto Montt will have priority to fill the Chaiten to Futaleufu stretch before they can sell any other tickets.  You will arrive in Futaleufu in the evening.

b. If you prefer not to spend the night in Puerto Montt, purchase a ticket (6 buses a day) from Kemel bus for Hornopiren. This charming little village is on the first fjord in route to Chaiten.  Before you search for a bed and breakfast, find the bus office and purchase a ticket for the following early morning bus from Hornopiren to Chaiten (1 bus a day). In Chaiten a connecting bus will meet you and take you to Futaleufu.  Nicolas LaPenna manager at the bus terminal in Chaiten speaks English  if you need any help.  +56 652.731.429

Three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays) there is a direct overnight ferry from Puerto Montt to Chaiten departing between 10 and 11 pm.  This allows for an connection on the early bus from Chaiten to Futaleufu arriving in the afternoon. From the Puerto Montt bus terminal take a taxi to the ferry office and purchase the ticket for the overnight voyage to Chaiten.
