Trekking Chile:
Ruta de los Arrieros Trekking Week

Follow the "Trail of the Neighbors " by trekking Chile's famous Futaleufu River Valley. Our expedition trip departs from our native wood lodge in the town of Futaleufu, and takes you on a perfect circuit of this Andean forest valley while immersing you deeply in the culture of Patagonia, Chile.

Day 1 Saturday: Arrival & Introductions
Arrive at either of our entry points in Puerto Montt, Chile or Esquel, Argentina, the gateway to Patagonia. Connect with our representative and travel to the remote riverside town of Futaleufu, surrounded by majestic mountains. You will find your accommodations at our comfortable inn and town cabins, and unwind from your trip with a hearty welcome dinner at the Futaleufu Adventure Center, which will serve as our starting point for this Patagonia trekking vacation.

Day 2 Sunday: Trekking - Las Escalas Valley
Start your Chile trekking vacation with an after breakfast orientation, then begin your first trek by walking downstream through green rolling hills and ranch land. Within several miles you will enter a deep black rock gorge. Our trail is cut into the side of the canyon, giving a bird’s eye view of the restless, radiant turquoise Futaleufu River below. Several miles later the gorge opens into the remote Las Escalas Valley. We will trek across this enchanting valley and enter an old growth, temperate forest of Coigue trees. Here we will find a remote ranch where we will pitch our tents and eat dinner as the sun sets on the peaks above, setting them on fire. This is trekking in Patagonia at its best!

Day 3 Monday: Trekking - Throne Room & Rio Azul
Wake up to the sounds of forest life, knowing there isn't a motorized vehicle or road for miles. Enjoy a filling breakfast in our host’s kitchen and learn how life is lived without roads, electricity, or phones. The Futaleufu Valley trekking trail continues downstream, rejoining the Futaleufu River. You will be able to trek to an overlook of the powerful Class V “Throne Room” rapid. This Class V + rapid is a whitewater power storm blasting through a narrowing in the canyon walls. After viewing this maelstrom from a cliff above, we will have lunch on a gravel beach on the side of a huge calm pool below with excellent fishing. The trail continues with beautiful green meadows and spectacular vistas of the rugged mountains. We arrive at perhaps the climax of beauty at the confluence of the Rio Azul and Rio Futaleufu. Here under the gaze of the Tres Monjas (Three Nuns) peak we will stay at our luxuriousPatagonia Eco Camp. White sand beaches welcome us after we cross the Azul in tandem canoes. We will camp here for the night and enjoy the sauna, hot showers, masseuse and sit-down dining. Trekking in Chile doesn't get better than this!

Day 4 Tuesday: Trekking - Climb to the Tres Monjas Spires
Wake up for early morning start and one to climb as high as you can get to the Tres Monjas Peak. This offers a spellbinding view of the Azul and Futaleufu River Valleys. If you are lucky you may even get a visit from one of the massive condors that nest here in the spring and summer months. Near the base of the peak you will get to experience the enchantment of the rare Lenga trees, which only grow above certain altitudes and glow orange in the fall when their leaves change. They are the Patagonian version of aspens to some degree, though they look very different. The peak itself defines the border of Chile with Argentina. Carefully trekking down, you return to all the comforts and excellent food at Campo Tres Monjas.

Day 5 Wednesday: Trekking - To the Terminator Rapid
Today you can choose how far you want to trek. You will walk downstream through open meadows looking down on the Futaleufu River. Our destination is the Terminator Rapid where we can enjoy lunch on spot made smooth rapids by the river. Here you will get to see one of the best waves for surfing on the river, and perhaps even have a demonstration from a passing kayaker. The power and beauty of this river is will awaken your primal energies and put you in the mood for more adventures. After a relaxing picnic, we will head back to Campo Tres Monjas another fantastic meal.

Day 6 Thursday: Trekking Patagonia's Azul Valley and Lago Lonconao
After a substantial breakfast, we cross the Azul in our canoes and walk on a trail up the glacier-ringed Rio Azul Valley. Soon we will enter a cool dark forest and wind around the backside of the elegant and dazzling diamond blue Lake Lonconao. We will camp tonight at a small homestead and experience the local culture. If we are into hiking a 10-mile, 16 km day, we can reach an improved cabin at the end of Espolon Lake.

Day 7 Friday: Trekking - Lago and Rio Espolon
Today we will depart for another mountain lake, Lago Espolon, a glacier fed high alpine lake. At the end of the lake, the Espolon drains through a narrow, boulder-choked canyon with extreme force. The charging, violent cascade formed is called “The Devil’s Throat” or “La Garganta del Diablo.” After viewing this at a high overlook, we will trek down the side of the Espolon River where white sandy beaches wait for us to take a dip in their transparent waters. We will soon return to the little village of Futaleufu and our Adventure Lodge accommodations and to where Patagonia trekking vacation began.

Day 8 Saturday: Departure
Wake up for an early breakfast and drive back to Chaiten, Chile and your flight to Puerto Montt, or relax for a couple of hours and take our shuttle to Esquel, Argentina. As you catch a final view of the Río Futaleufu; surrounded by hanging glaciers and snow capped mountains, take a moment to reflect upon all of the amazing sights and experiences of this past week. After all these years we are still stunned that views like these exist. For those that want a longer trekking vacation we suggest trekking Patagonia's famous Cerro FitzRoy or adding a Torres del Paine trekking week.

PRICE: $1695.00 USD

Included: All meals, lodging, transportation and guides while trekking Chile with us. Round trip transportation between Futaleufu and Chaiten or Esquel.
